The Melanin Magic

The dynamic Maya Angelou once said “If you’re always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be”. This quote stands the test of time, as countless times women of color, especially black women felt like they had to dull their light or tone down their personality for society when it is clear that we shine brighter than one has ever expected.

However despite the world consistently stealing our culture, mocking our appearance, and critiquing our personas, we are constantly evolving and creating a better world for ourselves. The community of black women may be the most oppressed group of our society, but our resilience and push for change awarded us with the most educated and successful community. Whether it’s Oprah, Beyonce, the First Lady Michelle Obama, Meg the Stallion, Mayor Lori Lightfoot, or Miss Korra from Avatar herself, the various black queens in our existence provide us hope and courage to change our previously written narrative.

Black women are multi-faceted, a layered personality dives into the passion for community and social equity for all. The community of black women never ceases to amaze me, from the hipster queens, the melanin fashionistas, our special anime ladies, the bougie brunch broads, the geeky gals, and sassy street sistahs. The list is never ending, surrounded by innovation, culture, and constant creation we are forever evolving and impacting the world around us. Black women are a force to be wreckin with, dispelling stereotypes, overcoming oppression, dismantling systemic racism, and creating for a better future we take on the battle against the world, all while keeping a smile upon our face. Black girl magic is a superhero women have had for generations to come, the superpower that can truly change the world as we know it.
