The Diversity Breakdown

Welcome to the Diversity Breakdown, a laid out representation and opportunity to teach others and bring awareness to the importance of creating a seat at the table and allowing various shared experiences and perspectives to flow in order to create innovation.

I can sit here until my face turns blue explaining how Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace benefits the workplace culture: higher innovation, better decision making, employee engagement, reduced employee turnover, faster problem-solving, increased creativity, etc. However, I want us to take the time to truly self-analyze and understand the steps and impact we have on Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace.

Dafina-Lazarus Stewart once wrote this phenomenal piece that laid out each aspect of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and how it is incorporated into our daily self-reflection. I ask that you take a moment to put yourself in this self-reflection and answer these questions when thinking about your workplace culture.

Diversity asks, "Who's in the room?"

Equity responds: "Who is trying to get in the room but can't? Whose presence is in the room under constant threat of erasure?"

Inclusion asks, "Have everyone's ideas been heard?"

Justice responds " Whose ideas won't be taken as seriously because they aren't in the majority"

Diversity asks "How many more of (any minoritized identity) group do we have this year than last?"

Equity responds, "What conditions have we created that maintain certain groups as the perpetual minority here?"

Inclusion asks "Is this environment safe for everyone to feel like they belong?"

Justice challenges "Whose safety is being sacrificed and minimized to allow others to be comfortable maintaining dehumanizing views?"

Now that we have gained a better insight on our work culture in this self-reflection, I want you to take a step back to see how you can improve Diversity and Inclusion within your workplace. What steps can be take to impact change in the way you view various minority identities? How can you become a better ally and learn the cultures of others? What changes can you make to create better representation of all?

How can YOU create change in your workplace culture?
